All Christians, by the mandate of Christ are proclaimers of the good news and are also called to a dedicated and prayerful study of the scripture. But there are those who have been appointed to function properly as readers of the word of God in the liturgical assembly; this church calls ministry of lector or Readers. A Lector functions primarily in proclaiming the readings except the Gospel at Mass. Therefore, it was indeed another day of celebration in the OMV Seminary community in Nigeria as three of our brothers; Emmanuel Nwobi OMV, George Erumeste OMV and Daniel Damisah OMV were instituted into this ministry of lectors. The event took place on November 5, 2015 within the mass presided over by Fr John Idio OMV with Fr Jude Oseni Ogunu OMV and Victor Nwabueze OMV joining in the concelebration. Fr Idio in his homily reminded the brothers of the task they are to undertake as lectors and also charged them to be conscious of the spiritual, scriptural and physical dimensions of the ministry of Reader.
The Ministry of Lector is rooted in the power of the Word of God; those who serve as lectors are to make the Word of God an integral part of their lives by regular and prayerful study of scripture.
This marks a great step for our three brothers in their journey to the priesthood, as stipulated in Canon 1035 of the Code of Canon Law, which requires candidates for diaconal ordination to have received and exercised for an appropriate time the ministries of lector and acolyte.
